Governor’s Camp

We have had lots of wonderful cheetah sightings this month, Honey and her three male cubs (23 months old) have been seen on the plains and the areas south of the Talek River and the three males have been seen hunting up on the ridges and down on the plains. Another female was seen this month on Paradise plains where she successfully hunted an impala only to lose the entire kill to a hungry hyena.
The leopards are also doing well this month, Pole Pole (pictured above) and her son Kijana have been seen in the Riverine forests near Little Governors’. Zawadi and her cub has been seen out on the plains and another female with two large cubs that (we estimate to be 20 months old) have been seen in the rocky croton thickets near the Mara River, her cubs are old enough now to move on (leopard cubs usually leave their mothers at around 18 months) so we expect that they will part company soon.
Jackman and the other black rhino we saw in December and January continue to be seen; these black rhino love to browse on croton bushes and are often hidden away from view in the thickets. Guests were thrilled when they recently witnessed these two chasing one another out on the plains.
The Musiara marsh and riverine woodlands have been popular with the elephant families again this month. Many of these family units have very young calves which is always a good sign of health in elephant herds, since the females will often miss oestrus cycles when stressed.
We have had some lovely walking safaris this month with guests seeing family units of elephant and herds of up to twenty giraffe in the acacia woodland. An aardwolf has been seen on a few occasions just after dawn and many Tawny eagles have been seen nesting.

Benguerra Lodge

Horse Riding at Benguerra Lodge:

We are excited to announce that Benguerra Lodge has introduced horse riding as an additional activity for guests staying at the Lodge. Squib was the first horse to set foot on Benguerra Island when Pat Retzlaff and his team brought the small herd of 10 horses, consisting of Arabs, Thoroughbreds and South African Boerperd to the island on a barge.
It took 3 hours to get all the horses safely from the barge onto the island. The moment they set foot on land, they immediately headed for the first bit of greenery they saw, which was Andrew and Bonny’s garden! All the horses were originally rescued from Zimbabwe during the land reform process so each has a special and sometimes sad story. The horses have settled in well on the island.

Guests who have taken part in the Island rides can testify that this is an exciting new way of exploring Benguerra island from the beautiful white beaches to the top of the hills to watch beautiful Mozambican sunsets.

CHOBE CHILWERO UPDATE

February 2008: The upgrade to the bathrooms at Chobe Chilwero is underway. A number of the cottages have already been fitted with the new designer baths (pictured left) along with the fitting of new blinds which are in line with the natural, earthy tones of the lodge.

The completion of our new spa is also on track for its opening on 01 June 2008. The spa, which will be located at the pool area, is the first full spa in Botswana and will boast two treatment rooms, hydro baths, vichy showers and jacuzzis to ensure the best experience imaginable for our guests. The spa menus are being finalised and will include treatments from both the Africology and Thalgo product lines.

Sabi Sabi Makes World Top Ten

July 2007
Sabi Sabi has done South Africa proud by being named by Travel & Leisure Magazine as the 7th Best Hotel in the World, 6th Top Small Hotel, and 2nd Best in Africa and Middle East. This year has seen Sabi Sabi make a huge jump in popular ranking: a testament to the extensive refurbishments and major upgrades undertaken in recent years.
Travel & Leisure Magazine - the 'Wall St Journal' of the USA Hotel and Travel sector - published its 2007 Travel Awards last week, and confirmed Sabi Sabi's position as one of the travelling public's favourite global destinations.  The magazines' subscribers were invited to participate in a detailed questionnaire with categories including service, accommodation, location, food, value and ambience. Respondents were carefully screened by Travel & Leisure, which allowed only one questionnaire per subscriber, with travel industry professionals being disqualified. This competition has become a benchmark for excellence in accommodation.
Citing Sabi Sabi's competitive edge as 'A classic bush experience with a lodge to suit any mood', the accolade acknowledges its four separate 5-Star lodges, each with a very distinct character and atmosphere - those of "Yesterday", which is encapsulated in the experience at the romantic Selati Camp, "Today", which can be found  at the more contemporary Bush Lodge and Little Bush Camp, and "Tomorrow" which is epitomised by the ground-breaking Earth Lodge.
All four lodges offer an unforgettable day and night open Land Rover safari experience. A magnificent and unspoiled part of the ancient African continent, the Sabi Sabi reserve has a great biodiversity of habitat and wildlife giving guests an excellent chance of close, on- and off-road encounters with the 'Big 5' - elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard - as well as wild dog, cheetah and hundreds of other species of animals, birds and plants. It is this promise of the safari experience of a lifetime that draws guests back to Sabi Sabi time and time again.
"The lodge and accommodation upgrades, together with our unique brand of warmth, hospitality, fantastic safaris and commitment to service and excellence have resulted in the Top Ten placing," says Sabi Sabi Managing Director, Patrick Shorten. "Our constant aim is to ensure that each and every guest has a truly memorable Sabi Sabi experience."
